OPEN LAB

ON-GOING CLASSES

ESL -  English as a Second Language
Monday - Thursday 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Sponsored by Shawnee Community College
ESL is taught using:  group activities related to specific topic, interactive sessions with "Rosetta Stone" ESL software in a group setting and in individual practice sessions in the lab.

English/Spanish GED Preparation 
Tuesday and Thursday 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 pm
The GED curriculum is State approved for adult education: "MHC (McGraw-Hill Contemporary) Interactive GED." This software is supplemented with Spanish texts such as "Master the GED in Spanish."   The curriculum also includes GED Math. Student outcome after successfully completing the course will be preparation for the GED exam. Center staff will help the student identify GED exam dates and locations.

"Beyond School"
Monday - 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
This after school tutorial program is available for chidlren and youth in grades 1 - 8.

Call (618) 893-1922 for up-to-date information and curent schedules for any of our classes below. The Center Computer Lab is available for students enrolled in any of these classes to continue practicing what they are learning on an individual basis and to further their employability skills. 

Keyboarding
Develop or improve keyboard skills. 

One 60-minute session – Any Level

Creating a Resume 
A resume is one of the most powerful employment tools; make your own with a user-friendly program. One 90-minute session – Any Level

Interviewing Skills for Employment
Prepare ahead of time for your job interview. 
One 90-minute session  – Any Level

Introduction to the Internet
Find out how to use the computer and the Internet to research the topic of your choice.   Learn to use MS Word along with Internet Explorer.  Two 120-minute sessions – Entry Level

Practical Internet Applications
Learn a variety of helpful Internet uses: worldwide email, travel plans, weather, maps, and more. One 135-minute session – Intermediate Level

Further Internet Explorations 
Continue the project begun in the Introduction course with more advanced
techniques. Practice using MS Word with Internet Explorer. Two 120-minute sessions – Intermediate Level

Telling Your Family Story - a & b
Document your family history using digital images and Microsoft Word.  In section “a” you will start your family tree with a digital portrait and your autobiography; in section “b” you will be interviewing and taking pictures of other relatives to continue your tree. Two 90-minute sessions  – Any Level

Creating and Understanding Spreadsheets with Excel
Learn how to create a budget and use simple mathematical functions, such as addition, subtraction and multiplication, as well as basic formatting,  in four 60-minute sessions. Pre-requisites: basic computer skills and a working knowledge of Windows Operating System with Internet Explorer.

Managing More Complex Formulas with Excel
Learn how to use "3D" equations and create uniform formats across different worksheets and to rename cells in four to six 60-minute sessions. Used is this class are more complex matematical functions, such as averages and division. Intermediate Level. Pre-requisite: Workshop on Creating and Understanding Spreadsheets.

Advanced Formatting and Organizational Issues in Microsoft Word
Learn how to set tabs in order to organize lists, manipulate margins, use bullets and outlines, and create a link to a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.  Also, learn how to use advanced fill settings, text boxes, and using autoshapes to manipulate shapes and layouts. (Previous Word and Excel experience required.)

Creating E-Forms Using Microsoft Word
Learn how use different form fields; such as a text form field, a check box form field, and a drop down form field, in order to create an electronic form.  Reinforces concepts learned in the previous classes, such as manipulating margins, using textboxes, and copying and pasting images from the Internet.  In addition, learn how to create charts using Microsoft Word.  Class also focuses on how to manipulate toolbars and furthers the student’s understanding of the Microsoft Office interface.  (Previous Word experience required, Excel preferred.)

Introduction to PowerPoint
Learn how to create a slide show presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint.  Includes the incorporation of sounds, animation, clipart, movies, and images.  Class focuses on how to interpret and use file extensions correctly.  (Previous computer experience required.) 

Photojournalism
Use PowerPoint and digital images to create a photographic presentation.  Learn to produce your own digital images and organize them to tell a story.  Previous experience with PowerPoint is required.

Electronic Poetry 
Using poetry, PowerPointand the Internet, create a slide presentation with hyperlinks to images and word definitions.  Search for images that match some of the words in your selected poem and find definitions that add to the understanding of the poem. 
Then, write your own poem following the same procedures.  This class is especially helpful for those learning English as a Second Language, but it can be great for everyone who enjoys poetry or would like to know more about poetry.

Artist Brochure 
Select an artist or illustrator and create a brochure about that artist with Word.  The Internet is used to research and download images related to the artist.  This class will help you to manipulate images in a Word document, set up a page for a brochure, write using a word processor, do research on the Internet and, at the same time, learn more about an artist.
