The following are preliminary results of a farmworker
housing
survey being conducted by IMC in coordination with the nationally-based
Housing Assistance Council (HAC). As of January 10, 2000, 170 surveys
were
completed. Each survey represents one housing unit.

The IMC Northern
Region's field
site is in Woodstock, McHenry County. This Region consists of eleven
counties,
including Boone, DeKalb, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, Lake, LaSalle, Lee,
McHenry,
Ogle, Winnebago. Sixty of the surveys completed to date have been in
this
Region- representing one-third (36%) of the completed surveys.

There were 328
people living
in these units, 48 of them children (15 percent). The average
household
size was 5.5 people, and the median household size was 4.5
people.
Households had an average of 4.2 wage earners. For households
with
children, two was most commonly the number of children present (mode).

There were 36 private market units (60 percent) and 24 employer-owned
units
(40 percent) surveyed. Children lived in 29 percent of
employer-owned
units, and in 47 percent of private market units.

The average
income for individual
wage earners was $1,101 and the median income was $1,000.

The average rent
for all units
in Illinois was $270, and the median rent was $150. The average
rent
for units surveyed in the Northern Region was $505, and the median rent
was $650. The average rent for employer-owned units was $100 (18
units, or 75 percent, provided free), and the median rent for employer
units was $0. The average rent for private market units was $775,
and the median rent for these units was $800.
